FAVORITE MUSICAL MEMORIES 2015

Moving to an apartment on Nassau Avenue and singing “Dress it up and go to Nassau [NASA? It doesn’t matter]” to myself on my way home.

Driving (well, riding in the passenger seat) through Times Square, rolling my face off, listening to Barter 6 at 3am the night after it came out. Soaking in the lights, chainsmoking Newports, letting Constantly Hating vibrate through my entire being.

The night we ate mushrooms and Trey showed me the DS2 track-by-track commentary on Spotify and everything felt really, really important.

Playing “What Do You Mean” on loop for over an hour and still feeling like it wasn’t enough.

DJing “Sorry” to a room full of my entire Twitter feed, everyone singing along, people jumping up on the stage dancing and getting dragged off, mushrooms hitting, feeling like the world’s most powerful wizard with NYC resting gently in my palms.

Listening to Jeremih “Paradise” walking over the Williamsburg bridge late at night after drinking too much champagne at a restaurant I can’t afford, and believing it.

That Sunday I took the bus to the far Rockaways, rented a motel, slowly consumed a bag of mushrooms and LARPed Lana’s “High by the Beach” video by myself. Woke up, jumped in the ocean at sunrise, felt very alone and loved it. Okay yea I ate a lot of mushrooms this year whatever man.

Sitting in DJ Spinn’s basement, smoking blunt after blunt after [etc], hearing him talk about Rashad and just laughing for hours.

WATCHING A BUNCH OF MUSIC WRITER NERDS DANCE LIKE NO ONE WAS WATCHING TO “CLASSIC MAN” 17 TIMES IN ERNEST WILKIN’S BACKYARD

The week DS2 dropped was a blur, and part of me feels like I should have taken better care to salvage and archive all of the little details. But in a way, it feels better that I just let it play out, in all its sublime chaos, becoming the guiding force behind the strangest summer of my life. Future isn’t a role model, but I can say with absolute certainty that DS2 changed me. I don’t know if it was in a “good” way, but it was right. It made me okay with being truly alone, for possibly the first time in my life. It kept me company as I skulked through New York, very fucked up, unsure of everything, just me maneuvering through the dark. I’m not the kind of person to ever be able to say “We gon be alright” to myself and believe it, but the way Future unspokenly affirmed “We’re not okay and we might not ever be and THAT’S OKAY” sunk into my soul. Anyway, that first week, I went to the free Chicago DS2 release party. You could just feel that you were a part of something, tucked precariously inside this giant, cresting wave that was about to break. I can’t remember the details of that show, but I’ll never forget the feeling.

It’s funny that Drake has doubled down on his anti-Internet thing, because Drake is the master of working your angles, the selfie strategy of the twitter honeys he takes arbitrary pot-shots at throughout If You’re Reading This Its Too Late. (And I absolutely think it is significant that, on this album, living this aspirational simulacrum Tumblr life, or whatever, is generally characterized as feminine.) Drake is no longer the living meme, the LOOK AT HIS SWEATER guy, that he was even two years ago. But he represents what the internet represents: the possibility to make yourself into whoever you want to be, if you stack your cards right. Drake is every NYC media bro who had an okay, if unremarkable, high school experience, didn’t lose his virginity til he was 18, considers himself a nerdy underdog, moves to the big city, and undertakes a years-long personal brand makeover, in which he projects signifiers of cool for long enough and with enough study that one day, almost imperceptively, he becomes cool—and once he realizes it, he is intoxicated with power.

And shit—I can relate to that! But that does not make it any more interesting or worthy of further exploration than those Been Trill shirts with all the logos on them circa 2013, which is to say, a bunch of symbols stripped of the thing they symbolize. A bunch of women’s names that you have woven into your story for the purpose of having a story to tell.

Drake used to pine for the 21st century Thot Pangaea that is “Houstatlantavegas.” Now he is Mr. Toronto and is making “The 6” a thing and has, I guess, been that guy all along, he and his woes, since way before hashtags. Two years ago, we would have ripped him to shreds for this kind of thing, like we did when he said that he started from the bottom. Nobody cares anymore. Whatever man, just keep making great-sounding music (and If You’re Reading This is great-sounding, as a total package, there is very little denying this) and you can be whoever you say you are, “6 God.”

But Drake, as a character, has become (or has revealed himself to have always been) one of the most boring types of people on earth: a composite of aspirational projections that has taken control of his host body. Don’t get me wrong, this will in no way prevent me from stomping through Bed Stuy with “10 Bands” on repeat with the thizz face on 1000. But let’s stop conflating “good” and “special.” And let’s stop entertaining dude’s bizarre Neo-Luddisms that he has convinced himself are deeper than “bitches be like [this]“ memes. “And show me pictures of they frieeeends / Just to tell me they ain’t really frieeeends”: kinda sounds like the Cliff’s Notes version of a Drake song, now that I think about it.

CRACK III is out now

info: Welcome to the third (and probably final) installment of the ‘CRACK’ series. The point/purpose of this edition is mostly the same as the previous two, but this time around, the tracks and curation are less geared toward listenability for those who are new to the genre. This edition is for the ‘real’ fans of the initial period of footwork. C-III is more about showcasing the ugly/dark/’raw’/beta forms of this music (tracks made in 08-09 by the younger kids (i.e. tracks like ‘get work’)) that were not in any type of spotlight whatsoever. Many of these tracks have been heard only 50-100 times despite being made 5+ years ago. At the same time though, (while a bit contradictory), this installment also intentionally features more lost/unreleased tracks from DJ Rashad, DJ Nate, etc.

Not much else to say besides I apologize for the slightly lower bitrates on this one, and a big thank you to everyone who has taken interest in this series and kept the original zippyshare uploads alive/circulating this past year ½ despite me deleting my blog/original postings of the tapes.

Compiled from Dec. 2013-Dec. 2014.

This, again, took a really long time to put together.

Enjoy.
