Anonymous asked: what do you think of keef's 2013 output up to this point?
i fucking love it. while i do think ‘macaroni time’ (def his best song this year) falls slightly short of the unfuckwithability of ‘love sosa’ and ‘don’t like’ (altho i prefer ‘macaroni time’ to ‘don’t like’ actually), i love that he’s following the trajectory of ‘finally rich’—weird beats that defy the stereotypes of “drill” that his flow can sort of sink into & play around in, using his voice more for ~vibes~ than words—and taking it to extremes. ‘hobby’ is the prime example for the former; the way he just sorta falls into zay’s super strange beat makes it seem a lot easier to rap over than i’m sure it actually is. and ‘go to jail’ (his 2nd best song this year imo)—i mean, the boy is straight up speaking swaghili half the time but his voice, even his adlibs, have such emotional heft. the really cool thing to me with this song that gets me v excited about what’s to come from him in the future is that there’s always been a certain pathos or vulnerability at the heart of many of his songs (‘no tomorrow,’ ‘save that shit,’ ‘finally rich’ come to mind) but it used to feel unintentional, little peeks of tenderness leaking out. but with ‘go to jail’ it seems like he’s comfortable enough to let us see that part of him intentionally. that fucking pumps me up.
